Elementary processes which govern the evolution of microstructures during solidification of single crystal Ni-base superalloys. Felicitas Scholz produces single crystalline Ni-base superalloys in project B7 of SFB / TR 103 using a modified Bridgman method. As part of her PhD thesis entitled "Elementary Structure Processes in the Directional Solidification of single crystalline Superalloys," she investigates the formation of crystal defects during solidification / crystal growth. The focus here is on the crystal mosaicity, which represents an essential structural parameter of Ni-based superalloys. Dendrites can be thought of as subgrains, which are slightly misoriented with respect to other dendrites. The microstructure is characterized by different methods. It includes a newly developed tomographic orientation-imaging analysis, but also electron microscopic examinations such as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). In addition, electron microscopy (EPMA) and atomic probe tomography (ATP) are used to analyze the chemical composition across all scales. The re-assess basic solidification processes.
