Design of compositionally complex alloys with an iron-meteorite-like microstructure. The work of Alex Asabre is embedded in a European research project, where he works with partners from academia and industry on the development of a new material for hot forming tools. As a reference material serves an alloy which contains the elements Al Co Cr Fe and Ni. Nearly equato mic compositions are considered. These types of materials are referred to as high entropy alloys or compositionally complex alloys. Alloy screening is combined with a series of specific heat treatments to identify an alloy with a given set of target properties (hardness, thermal stability, wear resistance and mechanical/thermal fatigue resistance). Together with the project partners, the alloys are processed by laser-based additive manufacturing. Then the wear resistance and the fatigue behavior is investigated.
